The Office of the Registrar worked with the Office of Student Life last year to offer students the option of including their EET when they request an official academic transcript. The Office of the Registrar took another step this spring by offering students the option of receiving a certified electronic PDF transcript that can also include the EET.

The program helps place 黑料不打烊 graduates ahead their counterparts at other institutions when applying for jobs, graduate programs and other post-graduate opportunities. The combined transcripts show employers that 黑料不打烊 graduates possess skills and experiences that set them apart from other college graduates.

Student, registrar published in new book /u/news/2014/04/29/student-registrar-published-in-new-book/ Tue, 29 Apr 2014 18:50:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/04/29/student-registrar-published-in-new-book/ Helping Veterans Succeed, by SACRAO authors Dr. Jacqueline Elliott, Jeremy Gray, Zachary Hayes, Reta Pikowsky, Dr. Rodney Parks, Kent Seaver, and Erin Walker.[/caption]Multiple SACRAO authors undertake an exciting new AACRAO publication entitled, Helping Veterans Succeed: A Handbook for Higher Education Administrators.

In the past decade, there has been an influx of veterans returning from recent conflicts and attending higher education institutions. This number will continue to grow in the coming years as more and more soldiers return home. The Post- 9/11 GI Bill and the many projects to help veterans receive educational benefits have helped to assure that many of these soldiers will attend higher education institutions.

Student veterans are a unique population of students who are vastly different from traditional students and even have a large diversity amongst themselves. These students require specialized services at colleges and universities. Higher education administrators need to better understand this and help with the variety of transitioning issues that these students encounter. This new handbook gives an overview of these issues and how to help student veterans succeed.

Student, registrar present research on victims of sexual violence in higher education /u/news/2014/02/25/student-registrar-present-research-on-victims-of-sexual-violence-in-higher-education/ Tue, 25 Feb 2014 20:50:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/02/25/student-registrar-present-research-on-victims-of-sexual-violence-in-higher-education/
Senior Leah Hayes discusses her research with SACRAO attendees.
Leah Hayes, a senior psychology major at 黑料不打烊, presented her research at the Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (SACRAO) conference held in Raleigh, N.C., from Feb. 16-19, 2014.

The research focused on the integration challenges female students face when they transfer institutions after experiencing sexual violence. Under the guidance of University Registrar Rodney Parks, Hayes examined the effects of student campus life after experiencing sexual violence victimization.

The research highlights the challenges of students who reverse transfer to new institutions following sexual violence and the integration challenges they face following the transfer. By better understanding the transfer student experience coupled with the traumatic effects of their victimization, the research hopes to highlight specific response programs that could be focused for survivors of sexual violence to reduce or eliminate student displacement.

Student, registrar receive Distinguished Journalism Award at SACRAO /u/news/2014/02/25/student-registrar-receive-distinguished-journalism-award-at-sacrao/ Tue, 25 Feb 2014 20:30:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/02/25/student-registrar-receive-distinguished-journalism-award-at-sacrao/
Matthew McCrickard of Belmont awards Ashley Edwards and Dr. Rodney Parks with the Margaret Ruthven Perry Award Distinguished Journalism Award.
Junior Ashley Edwards and Registrar Rodney Parks received the Margaret Ruthven Perry Distinguished Journalism Award on Feb. 16. The honor is awarded annually to the top SACRAO journal article. The publication, entitled Transgenderism and the College Experience, provides an ‘in their own words’ narrative of the challenges transgendered students face while transitioning during the pursuit of their bachelor’s degrees.

The ground-breaking research provides a glimpse into the challenges these students face on a daily basis. Such challenges include determining personal identity, struggling against the classification of a mental disorder, and attempting to live life as the opposite gender until their transition can be underway. Even during the transition, students still struggle with their identification on academic and legal documents, which cause problems both in the classroom and with campus services, such as health care and housing. The goal was to provide recommendations on how to better serve the unique needs of this growing population on college campuses.

Additionally, Edwards and Parks presented a formal session during the course of the conference describing the research and making recommendations to more than 60 participants. The presentation was a huge success, providing an inclusive environment for an informed discussion of the needs of these students and provided guidance on how to proceed with future solutions.

Registrar, student present publication excerpt at SACRAO /u/news/2014/02/21/registrar-student-present-publication-excerpt-at-sacrao/ Fri, 21 Feb 2014 21:10:00 +0000 /u/news/2014/02/21/registrar-student-present-publication-excerpt-at-sacrao/ 黑料不打烊 Registrar Rodney Parks and 黑料不打烊 senior Erin Walker, a student research assistant majoring in psychology, presented a visual representation of a section of the upcoming AACRAO publication at the SACRAO conference in Raleigh on Monday, Feb. 17.

The publicationHelping Veterans Succeed: A Handbook for Higher Education Administrators” seeks to increase administrators’ awareness and understanding of student veterans along with providing concepts on how they can help this growing student population succeed. Parks and Walker are two of the co-authors of the upcoming publication. The section they presented was the one they authored, which encompassed the topic of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) and how these disabilities may interfere with veterans attending higher education institutions. It also looks at how administrators can better service these specific groups of student veterans.

PTSD and TBIs are becoming increasingly more common due to the frequent occurrence of IED injuries in the existing conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. Higher education institutions need to be more aware of these disabilities because of the influx of soldiers returning from active duty that will be utilizing their educational benefits in the coming years. These disabilities can be detrimental to everyday functioning and administrators should prepare to help these students by being knowledgeable, understanding and flexible while interacting with them and aiding them in their pursuit of higher education.

This publication will be released the end of March/early April and will be an advance toward increasing the awareness of administrators who service student veterans wishing to succeed.

Alumnus, registrar present research on vegetarian, vegan students /u/news/2013/11/18/alumnus-registrar-present-research-on-vegetarian-vegan-students/ Mon, 18 Nov 2013 21:35:00 +0000 /u/news/2013/11/18/alumnus-registrar-present-research-on-vegetarian-vegan-students/ Evans and Parks presented a phenomenological case study at the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) Strategic Enrollment Management Conference on Nov. 11-13.

Despite the growing number of students who self-identify as vegetarian or vegan, little research has been conducted on how college campuses can work to recruit and retain these students. Issues such as on-campus dining facilities, housing selection and programming resources were explored.

Using a dual instrumental case study, the authors explored the experiences of two vegan and four vegetarian students attending the university in an effort to shed light on the challenges and needs of this vulnerable student population. The authors provided recommendations for campus administrators to help address the needs of this growing student demographic.

If you would like a copy of the presentation, feel free to email Parks.

Student, registrar team up to present research on transgender students /u/news/2013/11/14/student-registrar-team-up-to-present-research-on-transgender-students/ Thu, 14 Nov 2013 13:45:00 +0000 /u/news/2013/11/14/student-registrar-team-up-to-present-research-on-transgender-students/ Despite a growing awareness of transgender issues at the national level, higher education is just beginning to recognize the challenges faced by transgender college students. With that in mind, 黑料不打烊 junior Ashley Edwards and Registrar Rodney Parks presented a phenomenological case study to the National Conference on Students in Transition in October.

As students transition, they face a number of challenges within campus environments, including barriers to changing their academic records, difficulties with campus facilities and identity issues in the classroom. Using a dual instrumental case study, the authors explored the experiences of one male-to-female and one female-to-male transgender student to shed light on the challenges and needs of this vulnerable student population. Their presentation was titled “Transgenderism and the College Experience: Transitioning Challenges During Higher Education.”

Edwards and Parks also provided recommendations for campus administrators to help address the needs of this growing student demographic.
