Come See Environmentalist Anna Lapp茅 April 20 & 21 /u/news/2011/04/14/come-see-environmentalist-anna-lappe-april-20-21/ Thu, 14 Apr 2011 20:10:00 +0000 /u/news/2011/04/14/come-see-environmentalist-anna-lappe-april-20-21/ On Wednesday, April 20 and Thursday, April 21 Anna Lappé will be visiting campus in celebration of Earth Day. Ms. Lappé is respected for her work on sustainability, food politics, globalization and social change. Named one of Time’s “eco” Who’s-Who, Ms. Lappé is a founding principal of the Small Planet Institute and the Small Planet Fund. Her latest book is Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do about It.

Ms. Lappé will be speaking at 7:30 p.m. in McKinnon Hall on Wednesday, April 20. Following her talk, she will be available to sign copies of her latest book. Copies of the book will be available for purchase before and after her talk.

Ms. Lappé will also be the guest speaker for College Chapel on Thursday, April 21 with remarks entitled Hope’s Edge: Connecting the Planet, Plate and Place.

Please join us for one or both of these events and encourage others to attend as well.

Her visit is sponsored by the Office of Sustainability, General Studies, the Center for Environmental Studies and the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life.

Who: Contest is open to ALL 黑料不打烊 students (including iMedia)

What: Contestants are asked to create a 60 second video about sustainability at 黑料不打烊. Some potential ideas include: new composting initiatives at Octagon, how students are being sustainable on and off campus, LEED certification in the new Greek houses, 黑料不打烊’s geothermal heating/cooling system in Colonnades, and more! If you have questions about your potential topic, please consult the Office of Sustainability (Alamance 111 or cbaumgarten@elon.edu). More information about campus initiatives can be found at www.elon.edu/sustainability

Submissions must be in a format viewable using Quicktime or Windows Media Player.

Judges will be evaluating each film using the criteria of content, creativity, and production quality. Winners will be announced at the Earth Day College Coffee on Tuesday, April 19th, 2011. Grand prize winner will receive $250, and the runner up will receive $100.

When: Submissions are due FRIDAY, APRIL 8 by 5:00pm to ALAMANCE 111 (Office of Sustainability)

Take a photo of anything sustainable you see on campus, and post it to our Facebook wall (see link at right). Some ideas for pictures include campus sustainability initiatives, yourself or friends doing SOMETHING sustainable, and more… be creative! Each Friday we will choose one winner to receive $20 Phoenix Cash.
