American Studies encourages interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary scholarship in U.S. cultures and histories broadly defined. It welcomes frameworks of comparative, international, and/or transnational perspectives. With an editorial staff from a number of areas of study, the journal offers provocative perspectives on a variety of issues.Frequent special sections and special issues create a space for a broad discussion on a single topic. Articles on pedagogy inform the American Studies classroom. The book review section aims at keeping readers conversant with contemporary scholarship.

American Studies first appeared in 1959 and has 1,000 current subscribers. In 2005 it merged with American Studies International, and welcomes submissions with an international perspective.

New Deadline for the 2011 American Studies Award for Outstanding Research /u/news/2011/04/28/new-deadline-for-the-2011-american-studies-award-for-outstanding-research/ Thu, 28 Apr 2011 19:52:00 +0000 /u/news/2011/04/28/new-deadline-for-the-2011-american-studies-award-for-outstanding-research/ The American Studies Program would like to announce its inaugural Award for Outstanding Research in American Studies. The Program will present up to four $100 awards for papers written in the past academic year that best exemplify interdisciplinary research in American culture. Winning papers will be published on the American Studies’ website.

Students are invited to submit 8-15 page papers on subjects that combine knowledge and methods from anthropology, art history, communications, history, law, literature, political science, sociology and other disciplines to interrogate multiple perspectives, recognizing how various individuals, peoples and groups help create American society as well as challenge its institutions, within or outside the United States. We welcome papers on any aspect of American culture, including, but not limited to, comparative ethnic and cultural studies, public culture and visual culture. Students need not be minors in American Studies to submit a paper.

Students may submit their papers, in a Word document (.doc or .rtf) by May 5, 2011 (new extended deadline) to Dr. Crystal S. Anderson, Coordinator, American Studies Program, canderson14@elon.edu. Please direct any questions to Dr. Anderson as well.
