Jim Barbour publishes paper on medieval stone carver work practices /u/news/2011/04/14/jim-barbour-publishes-paper-on-medieval-stone-carver-work-practices/ Thu, 14 Apr 2011 20:08:00 +0000 /u/news/2011/04/14/jim-barbour-publishes-paper-on-medieval-stone-carver-work-practices/

The work is the beginning of a series of papers exploring the movement patterns of mid-level artisans during the Church’s “building boom” of the 12th and 13th centuries. This piece outlines the approach to research and finds evidence of a movement pattern of a particular carver, Arnau Cadell. Rather than use traditional economic evidence this series is using the distinctive carving style of this particular mason to establish his movements. The English title is “A Different Song: Schneider’s ‘Singede Steine’ as evidence of work practices in the late 12th century.

Barbour and Tiemann present papers at Eastern Economic Association meetings /u/news/2008/03/17/barbour-and-tiemann-present-papers-at-eastern-economic-association-meetings/ Tue, 18 Mar 2008 01:30:00 +0000 /u/news/2008/03/17/barbour-and-tiemann-present-papers-at-eastern-economic-association-meetings/ Jim Barbour, an associate professor of economics, and Thomas Tiemann, Jefferson Pilot Professor of Economics, presented “Crafters and Competition: The Impact of Amateurs on Professionals’ Livelihoods” at the 34th Annual Conference of the Eastern Economic Association, March 7-9, in Boston.  The paper deals with the fact that in some types of crafts professionals are readily able to make a living, while in others it seems they are not.  This is an exploration of the structural differences among various crafts that lead to this phenomenon.

Barbour also presented “Journeys of a Medieval Master Stone Carver in Catalonia” at the same conference. The paper develops a method of tracking a particular carver, using a 9th century Indian musical notation as the base, as he moved through Catalonia in the late 12th century.

Barbour and Morgan deliver invited paper at Budapest meeting /u/news/2004/04/05/barbour-and-morgan-deliver-invited-paper-at-budapest-meeting/ Mon, 05 Apr 2004 15:42:00 +0000 /u/news/2004/04/05/barbour-and-morgan-deliver-invited-paper-at-budapest-meeting/ Jim Barbour (Economics) and Betty Morgan (Political Science) presented their paper “Evolution in Subsidiarity, Proportionality, and the European Court of Justice: Implications for the Interactions Between the EU and the New Member States” at the Eighth-Annual International Research Symposium On Public Management (IRSPM). You may link to their paper here: http://www.elon.edu/barbour/IRSPM804.pdf.

This paper considers the European Court of Justice’s (ECJ) record, thus far, in using the principle of subsidiarity in reviewing member states institutional actions. Using decisions from relevant contemporary ECJ case law, the paper concludes with an assessment of the difficulties evident in calling for greater responsiveness and sensitivity by the court to issues of subsidiarity and proportionality and what those difficulties may portend for new member states.

Each year IRSPM attracts scholars of Public Management and Economics from around the world. This year 150 scholars from 28 countries were represented. This year’s symposium was hosted by the Budapest University of Economic Sciences and Public Administration.
