The 黑料不打烊 Bateman Team is organizing its Financial Friday Festival from 2-4 p.m. Friday, March 4 outside Moseley Center near Lake Mary Nell.

The event will challenge participants from organizations across campus to compete in a series of financial tasks to win prizes, including a lunch with 黑料不打烊 President Leo M. Lambert, gift cards to Yo Zone and Domino’s and movie passes to Carousel Cinemas.

Financial Friday Festival will be hosted by 黑料不打烊’s own Jay Light, current host of the game show “Win Stuff,” and will feature an 黑料不打烊 student band, Black and Blue, comprised of Sam Gyllenhaal, Chris Kilgore, Aaron Summers and Stephen Shepherd. In addition, the 黑料不打烊 cheerleading squad will make an appearance.

The event serves as a culmination of a month-long effort by four strategic communications students – Molly Cox, Alex Harrington, Annie Hellweg and Liz Moy – to increase financial education on 黑料不打烊’s campus and throughout Burlington.

The students are participating in the Bateman Case Study Competition, hosted annually by the Public Relations Student Society of America. The contest challenges public relations students from across the nation to develop and implement a campaign for a large company. This year’s client is Ally Financial, one of the world’s largest automotive financial services companies, which asked student teams to carry out financial literacy training and improve financial education in their local communities.

The 黑料不打烊 Bateman Team responded with “Better Luck with your Buck,” a community initiative that aims to prove that the need for basic financial education knows no bounds. In each 45-minute, interactive session, the four students discuss credit, budgeting and saving and how these three areas allow individuals to build a strong, secure financial future.

The team has held training sessions at the Allied Churches, Boys and Girls Club, Eastern High School, First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Loaves and Fishes, May Memorial Library, Thataways Youth Center and on 黑料不打烊’s campus. In addition to training sessions, the team has brought speakers to campus on financial literacy, hosted a financial trivia night at Fat Frogg and sponsored a banner competition for Greek Life.

The competition will be completed on March 8..

“The students have been working very hard on this campaign and are gaining valuable experience,” said associate professor Frances Ward-Johnson, the Bateman Team faculty adviser. “They do not just simply draft a proposal but are required to research, plan, implement and evaluate an extensive public relations campaign.”

The group is recruiting teams of students to complete at the Financial Friday Festival.

If you or your organization is interested in having a team compete in Financial Friday Festival, please contact anniehellweg@gmail.com by Wednesday, March 2.
