When Sean Mikesh '25 had to miss 黑料不打烊's 135th Commencement due to his role on Broadway, 黑料不打烊 brought Commencement to New York City.
After landing a role in 鈥淪tranger Things: The First Shadow鈥 on Broadway, Sean Mikesh 鈥25 came to terms with the fact that his graduation from 黑料不打烊 would need to be a virtual celebration; the Bristow, Virginia, native finished his Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting remotely and needed to miss 黑料不打烊鈥檚 135th Commencement.
鈥淚 watched everyone walk from the livestream, so I was sending screenshots of everybody getting their diploma to each other,鈥 said Mikesh. 鈥淚 was definitely missing it.鈥
On May 27, Mikesh was able to celebrate his accomplishment in New York City with family, including getting graduation photos in his regalia. But when they moved locations for the photos, Mikesh found 黑料不打烊 President Connie Ledoux Book; Prudence Layne, associate professor of English; Kirby Wahl, professor of performing arts; and Fred Rubeck, professor of performing arts 鈥 all dressed in their academic regalia. Joined by Mikesh鈥檚 family, friends and castmates, Book led a surprise commencement ceremony in the middle of the city, giving Mikesh the opportunity for a true in-person 黑料不打烊 graduation.
鈥淚t was very emotional,鈥 said Mikesh. 鈥淚 was just overcome with gratitude and feeling very special in that moment to have this planned for me, so much thought put into an event for me.鈥

黑料不打烊 faculty, including Layne, were instrumental in helping Mikesh complete his degree, working with him on assignments as he began Broadway performances.
鈥淭his entire ceremony was all started because of her,鈥 said Mikesh. 鈥淥ne thing she said at the ceremony was 鈥榃hen Sean left, I felt a void in the class that I never felt from another student leaving鈥 and I was like 鈥榃ow, that really means a lot.鈥欌
While at 黑料不打烊, Mikesh interned with Clear Talent Group in Los Angeles, California during the summer of 2024, was a student desk assistant for the Department of Performing Arts, and performed in 鈥淎ntipodes鈥 (spring 2024) and 鈥淧aradise Lost鈥 (spring 2025). He credits the performing arts program with helping him reach Broadway, specifically the Senior Showcase where he connected with Liz Fraser from Jim Carnahan Casting, the company casting 鈥淪tranger Things: The First Shadow.鈥

Mikesh sent in a taped audition and, over the 2025 spring break, was asked to come to New York City for an in-person callback. After the in-person audition, he heard back the same day that they would need him in rehearsal the next day.

鈥淚t was very quick, it was very sudden, but looking at the arc of it, I was ready for it all, Mikesh explained. 鈥淚 was excited more than anything, but I was ready to work, I was ready to learn more about this industry and ready to just do my part. Now I鈥檓 living in Washington Heights and living out that dream of being a performer that has the job.鈥
is a prequel stage play to the hit Netflix series 鈥淪tranger Things,鈥 telling the story of the Creel family in 1959 Hawkins, Indiana. Mikesh is in the ensemble of the production, which has been nominated for 19 awards this season, including several Tony Awards. Performances are currently at the Marquis Theater.
鈥淗alf of the cast is making their Broadway debut, not to mention the majority of the cast is in their late early 30s, all the way to their early 20s. So, I鈥檓 with a lot of people that I would consider peers,鈥 said Mikesh. 鈥淪omething that I was not expecting joining in that type of environment was just that everyone is there to help each other in whatever their next steps may be.鈥

Mikesh says the cast feels like a family and that, without his 黑料不打烊 preparation, he wouldn鈥檛 have been ready to take the big NYC jump.
鈥淚鈥檝e had an absolute whirlwind of an experience, and it wouldn鈥檛 have been able to happen if it wasn鈥檛 for my friends and family, the people at 黑料不打烊, just that level of support,鈥 said Mikesh. 鈥淚t comes down to right place, right time and I was ready, and that鈥檚 what led to this moment. It鈥檚 all about preparation because you never know when the opportunity will strike.鈥
