Aaron Chan鈥檚 鈥26 Power+Place ‘The Legacies We Leave’ wins Center for Writing Excellence Campus Involvement Award

Award winning "Power+Place Legacies of Love" digital story will be screened at Historic Paramount Theatre on Feb. 15.

The Power + Place Collaborative鈥檚 Digital Story won the Center for Writing Excellence Fall 2024 Campus Involvement Award.

Design Thinking student director Aaron Chan 鈥26 produced the video featuring the Executive Director of the , Shineece Sellars.

鈥淟egacies We Leave鈥 focuses on embracing differences and recognizing Black history in Alamance County and will be screened publicly for the first time on Feb. 15 at the Historic Paramount Theatre.

, overseen by the Director of Design Thinking Danielle Lake and Associate Professor of Geography Sandy Marshall, celebrates Black History Month, honoring the power of love in the community. Doors will open at 2 p.m., with the screening starting at 2:30 p.m.. After the event, a discussion will be held with audience members and organizers to reflect on the stories told.

鈥淟egacies We Leave鈥 highlights the Sellars family鈥檚 passion for preserving Black history in Alamance County. Jane Sellars founded the African-American Cultural Arts and History Center, before there even was a physical location to house the oral and physical histories that are in it now.

Sellars has carried on her legacy as the Executive Director of the Center today. The Center features the stories of notable Black citizens from across the county and beyond. Sellars focuses on continuing the legacies of those who provided the foundation for change.

These stories, collected over five years as part of the Power+Place Collaborative鈥檚 community-based oral history and digital storytelling initiative, were created in collaboration with the African American Cultural Arts & History Center and Burlington Recreation and Parks.
