Associate Professor of English Tita Ram铆rez and her debut novel, are receiving national attention with spots in Oprah Daily and The Today Show.
Ram铆rez recently published for聽 Oprah Daily 鈥 Oprah Winfrey鈥檚 lifestyle and culture website 鈥 recommending six books for Hispanic Heritage Month.
鈥淒on鈥檛 get me started on the incredible books written by and/or about Hispanic/Latine folx,鈥 Ram铆rez wrote in the article. 鈥淎s we say all the time, our community is not a monolith, so the variety of voices is tremendous. Just on this list we鈥檝e got Cuba, Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.鈥
鈥淭ell it to me Singing鈥 was also featured on on Sept. 20 during a segment with author Laura Dave recommending her favorite current novels. Dave described it as 鈥渁 heartfelt, gem of a novel鈥 that is 鈥渨arm, endearing and a little bit heartbreaking, too.鈥
The novel introduces readers to M贸nica, a young Cuban American woman expecting her first child, and her mother, Mirta 鈥 who reveals a life-altering secret from her earlier life in Fidel Castro鈥檚 Cuba. Ram铆rez drew from her own life in weaving the story together over the span of a decade.
It was published this summer by Simon and Schuster to warm reviews. described it as 鈥渁 rich portrait鈥 that 鈥渂ursts with humor,鈥 while the called it a 鈥渞iveting 鈥 heartfelt, frequently humorous, and historically germane exploration of how one family uses truth and love to heal from generational pain.鈥
