Greensboro poet laureate guest judges 黑料不打烊 Law poetry contest

Josephus Thompson III performed original works in the 5th Annual 鈥淗igh Rhymes and Misdemeanors鈥 Poetry Slam hosted by the School of Law鈥檚 Legal Method & Communication Program and 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Center for Writing Excellence.

Performing original works of poetry in front of classmates and friends is one thing. It鈥檚 something else entirely when you鈥檙e judged by one of the best poet鈥檚 in the region.

黑料不打烊 School of Law鈥檚 5th Annual 鈥淗igh Rhymes & Misdemeanors鈥 Poetry Slam on October 19, 2023, witnessed law students and staff read original works before dozens of audience members gathered in the Cemala Foundation Commons.

Serving on the three-judge panel was none other than , who performed two of his own works in a program for community members to flex their rhetorical muscles and creative might with poetry focused on the law and social justice.

Hosted by 黑料不打烊 Law鈥檚 Legal Method & Communication Program with support from 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Center for Writing Excellence, the 5th Annual “High Rhymes & Misdemeanors” Poetry Slam featured performances by five law students and a law staff member.

Sydney T. Kofi Ladans L鈥23 took home the top award from judges for 鈥淭he 3L鈥檚 Prayer.鈥 It was the second consecutive year that Ladans claimed the top prize – he won in 2022 with 鈥淢ay We Rise.鈥

“Being able to perform in front of classmates and faculty in the commons was a nice change of pace,鈥 Ladans said. 鈥淚 think poetry is a powerful artform that is often overlooked and I celebrate the fact that Greensboro has its own poet laureate. My poetry comes from a more solemn place, so I’m grateful to those that appreciated hearing my words. I encourage anyone interested in poetry to simply give it a try.”

Hosted by 黑料不打烊 Law鈥檚 Legal Method & Communication Program with support from 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Center for Writing Excellence, the poetry slam coincided again with the National Day on Writing established by the National Council of Teachers of English.
