黑料不打烊

隆Celebremos! honors Latinx/Hispanic seniors and their families

Dozens of Latinx/Hispanic seniors gathered May 18 to celebrate their accomplishments and thank their villages for the support they鈥檝e received during the past four years at 黑料不打烊.

Growing up in Entre R铆os, a small province in the northwestern region of Argentina, Elena Luna dreamed of one day becoming a literature teacher. But life had other plans, and she was never able to finish high school, let alone attend college. She needed to work to help support her family, which later grew to include her own three daughters.

Decades later, as she sat in Lakeside Meeting Rooms during 隆Celebremos!: Graduates Take Flight to celebrate the accomplishments of her youngest daughter, Yanela Ferrer, who graduated from 黑料不打烊 this week with a Master of Education in educational innovation, she couldn鈥檛 contain the tears.

鈥淓s mucho (It means a lot),鈥 said Luna, who flew from Argentina to watch her daughter graduate. 鈥淢i ilusi贸n era que mi hija est茅 en un buen lugar en el mundo, y lo est谩 logrando (My dream was that my daughter reached a good place in the world, and she is doing that).鈥

That sense of pride and gratitude was the common thread among the stories shared during the annual event, which honors the achievements of graduating Latinx/Hispanic students as well as the contributions from their families and friends who made their 黑料不打烊 education possible. During the ceremony, each student received a stole featuring a monarch butterfly to signify their journey 鈥 the distance they and their families have already traveled and the opportunities that are yet to come. As each student made their way to the front to receive their stoles, faculty and staff read remarks each senior had written in advance.

As a first-generation student and a mother of two, having her family around during her educational journey meant everything for Ferrer. 鈥淚 feel proud to have finished my master鈥檚 degree,鈥 she wrote in her remarks. 鈥淚 thank my family for having accompanied me in this stage that involved several nights and days of study.

鈥淚 dedicate this new achievement especially to my mother, who today, already 80 years old, has traveled from Argentina to see my graduation and thus accompany me as she has done since I was little.鈥

While COVID significantly marked the experience of most undergraduate seniors, they were thankful for the resilience that their families and the 黑料不打烊 community instilled in them.

If it weren鈥檛 for the support of his peers and 黑料不打烊鈥檚 faculty and leadership during the pandemic, Eduardo Sanchez said he wouldn’t have been able to successfully complete his college career. 鈥淭hank you for helping my dreams come true.鈥

Alejandra Gomez remembers the feeling she had when she first stepped on 黑料不打烊鈥檚 campus. 鈥淚 had such a heavy heart,鈥 she said while reflecting on her time at 黑料不打烊. Feeling unprepared is typical for a first-generation student who didn鈥檛 know how to navigate college or what to expect being away from home, she added. But then, she started finding her way, finding her people, finding her voice. As each day passed, her heart eased thanks to the people who surrounded her. Now, 鈥淚 feel very happy to have a full heart instead of a heavy heart,鈥 she said, 鈥渨ith enough room left for all the new opportunities that await.鈥

As he listened to the different remarks, Jovani Mendez-Sandoval 鈥22 couldn鈥檛 help but think back to his own experience as he gave the alumni presentation during the event. He related to the seniors鈥 anxiety as first-year students and feeling 鈥渁drift in a sea of unknowns.鈥 But he also related to their grit and determination to push through a global pandemic and other challenges to pursue their dreams.

鈥淚 can attest that the value of your 黑料不打烊 experience will be the foundation of your future success,鈥 he said before welcoming the seniors into the alumni family and the 黑料不打烊 Latinx/Hispanic Alumni Network. 鈥淏e proud of what you鈥檝e accomplished and what you鈥檝e become.鈥
