鈥淵ou are about to embark upon one of the most rigorous and I hope one of the most rewarding experiences of your life,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ecoming a lawyer.鈥

鈥淲henever I鈥檓 asked what makes a great intern or a new attorney, it is simply someone willing to learn,鈥 Walden said. 鈥淕ranted, being someone who is intelligent and a strong writer and researcher is a given. Beyond that, I want someone willing to work in an area of law that they had no prior knowledge about or even thought they鈥檇 like and tackle it as if they are born to do it.”

Interim Provost Raghu Tadepalli presented each member of the Class of 2024 with the symbolic gift of an acorn to represent the start of their growth as law students and legal leaders.

Then find ways to give back. Walden said there are many community attorneys can help resolve with the knowledge they possess.

鈥淟aw students and lawyers are uniquely positioned to help address the legal issues facing individuals, groups, and organizations to further the public good,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his may be easier for some than others based on the type of law you practice 鈥 but as a lawyer, even a law student, there are always opportunities to give your time and your talents.鈥

Finally, Walden said, never forget that an attorney鈥檚 reputation is critically important to his or her success.

鈥淎 brand and your reputation is important in many professions, especially those where you鈥檙e trying to attract and retain clients,鈥 he said. 鈥淟awyers are already the butt of many jokes and some negative stereotypes, so why feed that any further acting unprofessionally, disrespectfully, without honor or integrity?鈥

And protect your online reputation and how you present yourself to others. 鈥淟ock down your social media accounts as soon as possible,鈥 Walden said. 鈥淩emove questionable pictures that could put you in a bad light. Google yourself and see what comes up. If you see anything questionable that you鈥檙e not happy with, do something to change that.鈥

Faisal Sulman L’22 serves as the 2022 president of 黑料不打烊 Law’s Student Bar Association.

鈥淭ake a deep breath, reset, and try again. And if you still can鈥檛 get it, ask for help from faculty and staff and students.鈥

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Woodlief shared the symbolism of the acorn each received after signing the Honor Code poster. Their education at 黑料不打烊聽 – the Hebrew word for 鈥渙ak鈥 – will transform them over the next 2.5 years, Woodlief explained.

鈥淲hile earning good grades is nice, your reputation will depend less on your grades and more on what others observe about you – your worth ethic, your diligent preparation for class, your commitment to honesty and ethical behavior, and the civility and respect you show others in the classroom and out.
