Winter Term global programs send 黑料不打烊 students, faculty and staff around the world

More than 900 黑料不打烊 students, faculty and staff travel on 37 global programs this January, including 28 programs offered through the Isabella Cannon Global Education Center (GEC), three graduate programs, and six Fellows cohorts.

黑料不打烊鈥檚 Winter Term is again providing the opportunity for hundreds of students to participate in global experiences, with students, faculty and staff on 37 short-term programs around the globe.

Programs this January聽have聽faced聽challenges brought on by the Omicron COVID-19 variant, including testing requirements for air travel and border entry, as well as a major聽snowstorm in the Mid-Atlantic region聽that聽affected聽some travel plans.

鈥淲e are excited for the return of 黑料不打烊鈥檚 signature Winter Term study abroad and Study USA courses. At the same time, we recognize that the pandemic is not yet over, and that聽students and their聽families聽are understandably anxious,鈥 said Nick聽Gozik, dean of global education. 鈥淭he health and safety of students, faculty,聽staff,聽and聽host communities聽are聽always our top priority.鈥

The university increased communication efforts聽to聽help keep students informed as they prepared for travel and worked closely with global partners to adapt plans as needed to accommodate health and safety protocols聽while also maintaining high academic standards.聽The Isabella Cannon Global Education聽Center (GEC)聽has been聽sending daily messages with key updates and reminders. All program changes are being tracked on the聽Winter Term Travel Status page, which also includes an archive of GEC daily messages, beginning Dec. 27.

The recent development of the Omicron variant of the virus forced the cancellation聽of programs聽in the聽Netherlands and Greece聽due to conditions and travel restrictions in those countries.聽Other聽program itineraries are being adjusted to meet local聽health聽requirements and restrictions while continuing to support the academic and cultural learning objectives of the courses.

鈥淭he pandemic continues to聽shift聽how global learning can聽take shape safely and ethically,鈥澛燝ozik聽said.聽鈥淏ut,聽we have also learned聽a lot聽since summer 2020, when we resumed聽international travel and聽study.聽This has involved assisting聽nearly聽600聽study abroad聽and聽Study USA聽students聽and聽more than聽150+聽international students, who continue to聽face both health- and immigration-related challenges to study here.鈥

The return of Winter Term global programs,聽following a cancellation in Winter聽2021, marks 黑料不打烊鈥檚 highest volume of study abroad and Study USA since the start of the pandemic.

More than聽1,200 students applied for winter 2022 programs, far outpacing the typical range of 700聽to聽800 applications.聽Many聽applicants were seniors聽who聽had聽not yet participated in study abroad or Study USA聽programs and wanted to do so before graduation.聽To serve those students, the GEC created two聽鈥淕lobal Cities鈥澛爌rograms聽available聽only聽for winter 2022.聽Through these聽programs hosted by 黑料不打烊鈥檚 trusted on-site partners,聽51 students are studying on Global Cities: Florence, and 14 students聽are studying on Global Cities: London.
