黑料不打烊 students complete Peace Corps Prep program

黑料不打烊 has been repeatedly recognized as a top producer of Peace Corps volunteers, and this year saw 16 students receive certificates for successfully completing the preparation program.

Sixteen 黑料不打烊 students this spring completed the requirements of the university鈥檚 Peace Corps Prep Program, which prepares students for international service through mentoring, coursework and field experiences.

Through the program, students develop four competencies 鈥斅爐raining and experience in a specific work sector, foreign language proficiency, intercultural competency, and professional leadership and development skills. The program expanded in 2019 to cover all six Peace Corps service areas 鈥斅燗griculture, Community Economic Development, Education, Environment, Health and Youth in Development.

The Peace Corps, a volunteer program run by the federal government, enables participants to go abroad for at least two years to serve in a variety of roles in government, education and service. 黑料不打烊鈥檚 prep program, which is headed by Assistant Professor of English Jennifer Eidum, helps prepare students for volunteering in the Peace Corps or working in a variety of other service opportunities.

鈥淭he values of the Peace Corps Prep program feel especially important at the current moment, emphasizing intercultural competence, serving one鈥檚 community, and being a citizen of the world,鈥 Eidum says. 鈥淲e are especially proud of our recent graduates who are finding myriad pathways to service in the uncertainty of a global pandemic.鈥

Among those receiving certification with the completion of the program was Chloe Hultman, who completed many of the requirements while studying in Cape Town, South Africa through the 鈥淪ervice-Learning Project鈥 experiential learning course. She completed 120 service hours while in South Africa, including interning at the local nongovernment organization Call2Care. Within the organization, she worked with a local orphanage, youth empowerment program and after-school program.

鈥淲e fostered leadership and development of the children we worked with,鈥 Hultman says. 鈥淔or example, I helped design the curriculum for the after-school program to be intellectually, physically and emotionally engaging and enriching. 鈥 This was an incredible experience that I will never forget!鈥

Hultman is considering applying for the Peace Corps in several years, and following graduation, will be working in San Diego with Father Joe鈥檚 Villages, a nonprofit dedicated to providing housing and supportive services to individuals experiencing homelessness.

Laura Braley ’20

Laura Braley 鈥20 said that her work in the Peace Corps Prep Program made it possible for her to apply to the organization with confidence. It鈥檚 a path she had not considered entering her senior year, but one she headed down after realizing she wanted to 鈥済o somewhere interesting and do something meaningful鈥 after she graduated.

鈥淒r. Eidum and 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Prep Program gave me the tools to apply to the Peace Corps and guided me through the application process,鈥 Braley said. 鈥淓verything from resume review to interview preparation to support writing a motivation statement made a huge difference in my confidence throughout the process.鈥

Braley hopes to begin teaching English and life skills to primary school students in Lesotho, Africa, with the Peace Corps in September. 鈥満诹喜淮蜢肉檚 Peace Corps Prep Program introduced me to coursework that I have a passion for,鈥 Braley says.

Not all who pursue certification have their sights set on entering the Peace Corps. Lallo Yadeta 鈥20 completed the program and will spend the next year as an 黑料不打烊 Service-Year Graduate Fellow working with Alamance Achieves to improve educational outcomes for local students.

鈥淭he Peace Corps Prep Program has allowed me to create an 黑料不打烊 experience that was cohesive to my passions and goals,鈥 Yadeta says. 鈥淚t encouraged me to take courses that followed a common but not restrictive, theme, ultimately making me a better candidate for many of the positions I am looking to pursue in the future. The program also allowed me to connect with many mentors in the field of international service and fellow students with like-minded interests, exposing me to incredible opportunities and advice.鈥

Kathryn Noon 鈥21 completed the program at the close of her junior year, and is confident that service will be a component of her future endeavors. I felt like the program established a strong foundation to guide my classes and internship experiences,鈥 Noon says. 鈥淭hat being said, I also found that each of the criteria included components I was passionate about 鈥 engaging with my community, global health courses, challenging myself professionally.鈥
