Pi Mu Epsilon awarded two grants

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ's chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the nation's premier mathematics honor society, has been awarded two grants to enhance the mathematics research environment at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ.

The national office of Pi Mu Epsilon has awarded ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s chapter of the national mathematics honor society two small grants ($600) to enhance the mathematics research environment at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ.

One grant provides matching funds to support the chapter’s premier prize, the Pi Mu Epsilon Research Award.  This award, given annually each spring, goes to a current ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ undergraduate who has shown outstanding achievement in conducting and disseminating mathematics research.

The other grant is part of the Richard A. Good Pi Mu Epsilon Lectureship and Chapter Enhancement Program.  Funds from this grant will allow for the president of the national office of Pi Mu Epsilon (Dr. Eve Torrence from Randloph-Macon College, VA) to visit ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ next spring.  During her visit, Dr. Torrence will give a fun, undergraduate-accessible lecture on her area of mathematics research.  She will also meet with the chapter’s student officers to provide guidance and suggestions related to the chapter’s vision and 5-year plan.  Dr. Torrence will also meet with the chapter’s faculty advisor and selected institutional administrators to discuss ongoing financial and scholarly support for the chapter.  Finally, Dr. Torrence will also participate in ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s Pi Mu Epsilon induction ceremony.

The grant proposals were written by the chapter’s governing body: Amy Wagoner ’14 (president), Nakhila Mistry ’14 (vice president), Christopher Shill ’14 (treasurer), and Dr. Chad Awtrey (faculty advisor).

The chapter is very grateful to the national office of Pi Mu Epsilon, to Pi Mu Epsilon president Dr. Eve Torrence, and to Pi Mu Epsilon secretary-treasurer Dr. Paul Fishback for their continued support of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s chapter.

All in the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ community are invited to attend the next event sponsored by ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon: a guest lecture by award-winning mathematician Dr. Tim Chartier (Davidson College) on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at 4:00pm in Lakeside 212.  Watch for promotional materials concerning this event.  You won’t want to miss Dr. Chartier’s exciting talk!
