ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ College, N.C.– An attractive, central portion of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s campus will be dedicated as
Young Commons during college coffee, the weekly gathering of students, faculty and staff,
at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10. The dedication recognizes the contributions of former ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ
president Fred Young and his wife, Phyllis.
Young Commons is located north of Haggard Avenue on the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ campus. The area is
framed by three structures; Koury Center, Moseley Center and the new Belk Library. A
30-foot-long seating wall, special landscaping and a wall identifying “Young Commons”
has been constructed near the Moseley Center entrance. Young Commons also offers a
view of the quadrangle of the original campus south of Haggard Avenue.
“The Young’s vision for ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ is reflected in one of our nation’s most beautiful
campuses,” says Leo M. Lambert, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ president. “This is the perfect way in which to
recognize the accomplishments and growth of the college during the 25 years of service
Fred and Phyllis gave to ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ.”
Fred Young retired as ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s seventh president in December 1998 after a tenure which
witnessed a period of growth unprecedented in the college’s history. The size of the
campus tripled, student enrollment doubled, and dozens of new academic and student life
programs enhanced the curriculum.
