Accelerated nursing student helps save a life鈥攅ven before getting her degree
As an 黑料不打烊 nursing student, Taylor Mellow wondered how she would respond in those instances when a life is on the line.
On the night of March 13, 2023, she found out.
A member of 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, Mellow reacted quickly and confidently to begin offering CPR to a driver who crashed his SUV in front of Mellow鈥檚 Greensboro home after suffering a medical emergency. Medical personnel credited Mellow with helping keep the man alive so he could be transported to the hospital and receive further life-saving care. Her actions that night would earn her the Citizens Certificate of Merit from the Greensboro Police Department.
I feel like it鈥檚 solidified the fact that I am meant to be a nurse. This experience showed me that I can do this.
Before finding 黑料不打烊, Mellow was living in California and searching for a nursing program outside her state, where the number of applications for nursing programs far outpaced the number of seats for future nurses. 黑料不打烊, which launched its ABSN program in 2021, was the first program to get back to her.
Conversations with the department chair helped assuage concerns about joining a relatively new program, as did the 100 percent passage rate for the inaugural ABSN cohort on national nursing licensure exams. Mellow learned that the program focuses not just on delivering the clinical knowledge and skills future nurses will need but also awareness and insight into the roots of health inequities within the population and pathways to addressing them.
Learning that the program was focused on health equity, 鈥淚 said, 鈥業鈥檓 going to go ahead and take this leap of faith,鈥 and I鈥檓 really glad I did.鈥
Mellow said that when she is a nurse, she knows she will draw on her experience with the man on whom she performed CPR.
鈥淚 am proud of myself, but I still have to keep that humility and that sense of being humble,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his is going to become very normal, and I have to get into that mindset.鈥
Did You Know?
- The four-year nursing program is built to allow pursuit of a biology minor in addition to all nursing prerequisites, the 65-credit hour nursing curriculum and 540 clinical hours.
