COR 3570: Rome
Each student will complete a Core Capstone Project that uses Rome as a focal point but聽integrates and applies what聽you have experienced in your broader course of study at 黑料不打烊聽from first-year courses and language study, through聽Studies in the Art & Sciences and聽Advanced Studies, to your Engaged Learning Requirements (ELR), to this course.聽Topics could聽include science and the Vatican, racism, regionalism, feminism, football, or fascism. As the聽Capstone Project of the 黑料不打烊 Core Curriculum your project should require that you reflect on聽materials, experiences,聽and skills beyond your major and minor courses of study at 黑料不打烊. It聽should connect in some way to your聽expectations for life beyond 黑料不打烊, especially it can be聽seen as the sum of your liberal arts education (including co-curricular interests and聽experiences).
Points to remember:
鈥 How all of these pieces connect will be up to you! For some, the topic of the CCP will be an聽expansion from your聽major (or minor) studies at 黑料不打烊. For others, the process of researching,聽writing, or presenting the CCP will look like聽the kind of work you hope to do after 黑料不打烊. And聽for others, the topic and process of completing the CCP will be only聽tangentially related to聽your major or minor studies at 黑料不打烊, rather, the experience itself will offer an opportunity to聽reflect on the breadth of experiences central to a liberal arts education. It need not, and聽probably cannot, do all聽three, but the focus on balance is yours to determine.
鈥 The CCP is self-guided (with check points) and independently designed (with the promise of聽good mentorship and聽engaged peer review). Consider yourself the 鈥減roject manager鈥. Within聽reason you will decide what success will聽look like, determine what tasks need to be聽completed and in what time frame, and argue for why your project聽meets the requirements for聽successfully completing the course. As in the world beyond the carefully bricked walls of聽黑料不打烊,聽your success or failure will largely depend on your commitment to doing good work, your聽integrity during the聽process, and finding creative solutions to complex trans-disciplinary聽problems.
鈥 Your CCP can take a myriad of forms. Some examples would be: A traditional research聽paper with a unique thesis,聽a UNESCO application, a creative response (short film, dance,聽score, visual art, creative prose or poem), a travel聽guide, a business plan for a multinational聽company.聽Each of these projects must include:
鈥 a scholarly research process spanning the course of the term.
鈥 a textual component of at least 3000-5000 words (how this will be broken up will be up to聽the student).
鈥 visual support (not just illustration, but careful consideration of visual and material culture聽as it relates to your CCP).
鈥 a historicizing component (this may be primary or secondary)
鈥 a connection to the contemporary moment (this may be primary or secondary).聽Individual Components of the CCP:
鈥 15 points / What’s the Landscape?: This assignment should include at least three possible.聽CCP project topics — in聽other words, you are surveying the landscape that will be your 聽interaction with “Rome”. As we have done in class聽you will need to take a bird’s eye view of聽possible topics. Each version of your project proposal should be no more聽than one page聽and should include a brief research question, at least one scholarly source (cited using The聽Chicago Manual of Style), and the form you think your final “product” and presentation will聽take.
鈥 20 points / What’s the Story?: The first annotated bibliography should include at least 10聽scholarly sources. You聽should choose one source to serves as a model for citation practices.聽Put an asterisk by this model and include an聽example of in-text citation, an endnote, or a聽footnote, as well as a bibliographic citation. This will serve as the聽foundation for your style聽guide (to be completed later).
鈥 15 points / What’s Your Point?: Using your annotated bibliography as a starting place, you聽will *draft* a thesis聽statement that will serve as a guide for your project, as well as three to聽four opening paragraphs that explain how聽your thesis is based on your research and how it聽will be demonstrated across your project. For assistance crafting a聽thesis statement you聽might consult: http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/thesis-statements/
鈥 20 points / This. This is my point!: Your draft will take a number of forms depending on聽your final product but聽from the draft I should be able to see:
鈥he form your final product will take. For example, if you are writing a formal paper, an聽outline won’t suffice here.聽If you are making a film you need at least a script with some聽images, you get the picture…
鈥our unique thesis, clearly marked in BOLD font.
鈥he 鈥渁rc鈥 of your project, in other words, you should have a basic intro, parts of your聽argument, and a conclusion.
鈥our citation style in practice. This is the last instance where “accidental” instances of聽plagiarism can be revised聽without penalty.
鈥he draft should reference most of your bibliography.
鈥 30 points / Presentation: These will be divided between your in-class presentation (which聽can be NO longer than聽five minutes) and the formal 鈥減oster鈥 presentations that will be聽open to the public. I will use the following rubric for聽both the Public and in-class presentations and will add the two grades together.
COR 4400: A Liberal Education: What Is It Good For?
The final project is designed to synthesize the semester鈥檚 readings and interpretations, using聽your own creativity,聽with your larger Core/黑料不打烊 experience. You will design and create/implement a project that demonstrates your聽understanding of key concepts of liberal聽education and their relationship to life. For example, you can write a poem,聽story, play, or聽filmscript, create a website, video, or piece of artwork, illustrate a book, perform a dance,聽design and conduct an experiment, present a case, give a convocation speech, publicize the聽opening of a new聽college, imagine an interview with yourself after graduation, etc. Use your聽imagination and be as creative as聽possible! Sometime after mid-term you will need to set up聽an appointment with me to discuss your ideas and聽create a plan of implementation.聽As a means to ground your creative project you will deeply investigate one or two聽key聽concepts of a liberal education. In addition, you鈥檒l investigate a key problem or concern that plagues our 21st聽century world. In a formal research paper of 14-16 pages, relying on sources聽from various disciplines, you will聽situate the core concept historically, as well as connect it to聽contemporary concerns or issues. Most importantly, you聽will use the skills acquired from a聽liberal arts education to provide the multiple perspectives surrounding the聽problem and pose聽logical, relevant, feasible solutions to that problem.
COR 4160: Wealth and Poverty
Over the course of the semester you will have the opportunity to put the research skills and聽creative thinking you聽have been developing through your Core Curriculum courses and, for聽some of you, your poverty studies courses聽into action through the development of a thorough聽and feasible design of a social change project that would聽contribute to the alleviation of聽poverty or address a corollary concern related to poverty.
鈥 Step One: By the end of the second week of class you will be expected to submit a聽300-400 word prospectus聽describing the problem or aspect of poverty that you would like聽to address in your social change project.
鈥 Step Two: Submit a 250-word description of your preliminary idea for your social change聽project. These will be聽shared with the class and used as the basis for class discussion and聽development.
鈥 Step Three: Submit a final 1250-1500 word plan that outlines your social change project聽step by step and聽includes the following: description of the social problem in context聽description of the social change project and how聽this project will help address the聽problem; discussion of staffing/resources, timeline, funding requirements,聽evidence of聽interest of community/partners.聽This project design will require: background research on issue, contact聽with people directly聽involved with the issue, the project to be informed by the course readings 鈥 intentionally and聽explicitly, it must provide a deliverable, it must be grounded in the appropriate disciplinary聽tools for the聽development of your project, it must be feasible and professionally presented.聽Next year鈥檚 Poverty and Social聽Justice class will choose one of these projects as their service聽project for the year.
